Michelle Wedel is the creator of Meeka Fine Porcelain Jewelry. From San Francisco and Toronto, she now resides in Redmond, Washington. She has a background in metalsmithing and studied at College of Marin, California, Ecole de Joaillerie in Montreal, Toronto School of Art, and has apprenticed at the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco.
What started out as a hobby during her high school years quickly turned into a passion. She knew straight out of high school that she wanted to be a jewelry designer and travel to different places to learn from various institutes. Her work was being accepted into some of the top galleries in North America and eventually opened up her own gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Not too long after opening the gallery, she and her husband decided to start a family and move to Boise, ID. She took many years off to raise her son and now that he is older, she is able to get back to her passion. She started working on her previous designs using silver and gemstones, but her heart wasn’t in it. It wasn’t that jewelry design didn’t interest her anymore, but rather the medium wasn’t speaking to her. What she wanted was a medium she could form into the visions she had in her head and have a vast array of colors. Porcelain is what ended up being the answer. Now she was ready to start her new line with excitement and enthusiasm.
With Michelle’s latest line of jewelry, you’ll find that she set out to create something for everyone. The spikey pieces for that bold edgy woman who demands to be noticed. The un-uniformed wavy disk pieces have a fun and flirty feel, and the gold accent pieces are for the refined and polished. The pieces can be sophisticated as well as have a bohemian feel. Each piece is hand formed, smoothed and fired, and then they get a coat of glaze and fired again. A third firing is needed for the 22k gold accents. No two pieces are alike and she is always creating new designs to entice her clientele.
Michelle has been published in Art Jewelry magazine and has won an award for non-precious jewelry at New Mexico Arts and Crafts Fair. She has been commissioned to do many special pieces and is pleased to continue making custom pieces.
